Requiem Laus: The eternal plague
29/07/08 || Euthanatos
Portuguese newcomers Requiem Laus release their debut after something like a hundred demos. Practice makes perfect, right? I certainly hope so. At first, I would categorize the sound portrayed in “The Eternal Plague” as death metal, but the band sure does spread its songwriting through a gamut of styles, such as melodic black metal and doom. All the better, as it makes Requiem Laus’ music the more enjoyable, not really sounding like anything out there.
I tried thinking of someone to compare them to, just to give you, the avid reader, somewhat of a notion of what exactly these guys are about, but I couldn’t really come to any conclusion. They certainly are unique and hard to pin down, much like a thousand dollar whore. While tracks like “Am I Not Mercyful?” and “Gallery of Lies” show a more mid-paced rhythm, there are also faster, more interesting efforts like “Black Decay” and “Hatred Guilt”. There are also nice acoustic/instrumental tracks “Ad Vitam” and “Mors”. Something that did confuse me was the vocals. Sometimes the growls are so odd, it sounds as if the singer is yelling with some sort of effect pedal. I don’t know, maybe his voice is just bizarre, but it does sound extremely artificial from time to time.
While not exactly revolutionary, these lads have a lot going for them as they have managed to create a different sound, completely their own, and considering this is only their first full-length album, that is quite an achievement. Look out for these fuckers in the future, we may here grand things from them yet.
The cover: It’s not atrocious, but a little more effort would have been nice.
7 heroes of the sea out of 10.
